Heath Police Say 'Burnouts' Won't Be Allowed

Heath Police Chief Tony Shepherd

Thousands of people are expected in Heath Saturday night to see the hot rods and muscle cars in the annual Mopar Super Cruise. Heath Police Chief Tony Shepherd says public safety is his priority...

“We will be out in force. We welcome Mopar participants and spectators, and we look forward to it each year, so we’re just wanting a safe, fun event.  The thing that worries us the most every year is that the crowd usually walks right up to the roadway. This is certainly a very unsafe atmosphere when they’re right on the roadway and one of these cars are perhaps showing off a little bit and a person is only a foot away. If the car gets loose and hits somebody in the crowd, then we’ve got a tragedy.”

Shepherd says “burnouts” by vehicles will not be allowed, and there will be a “no tolerance” approach for people violating traffic and alcohol laws...

“The Mopar participants generally are very well behaved, and most of our problem comes from the crowd. Now we have some vehicles that like to display their horsepower in an unsafe and illegal way, so we certainly want to preclude that from happening as well.  In years past we’ve had problems with traffic violations and, more recently, alcohol consumption has been a problem...We have thousands of folks watching this spectacle and the alcohol seems to generate some unruliness.”

Shepherd says plainclothes officers and Ohio Department of Public Safety agents will help monitor the area for unlawful alcohol use...

“The alcohol consumption seems to have escalated in the past couple of years, so I’ll have plainclothes officers and I’ve asked the Department of Public Safety, through their investigative unit, to share with us some of their plainclothes agents to help us look for those alcohol violations.”

If you want to avoid the traffic congestion at the cruise-in, Shepherd suggests a detour...

“My suggestion is 30th Street and Harris. That will take you right around back to Hopewell and 79, where you can continue north and vice versa, if you’re traveling south...You’ll escape most of the congestion.”

The Super Cruise will be held from 7-11p.m. Saturday on Hebron Road between Hopewell Road and 30th Street. It coincides with the 28th annual Mopar Nationals drag-racing this weekend at National Trail Raceway in Hebron.
